Growing Toxicity Threatens Community Dynamics
In the latest update on the Paradox Interactive Forums, Hallikainen welcomed players back from the holidays with promises of modding support and bug fixes. However, the CEO devoted a significant portion of the message to address the escalating toxicity within the player base. The developer highlighted the negative impact on both the mood of community members and their enthusiasm for creative endeavors and modding.
Hallikainen acknowledged the historical importance of developer-community interactions but raised concerns about the safety of developers in the face of growing toxicity. The studio now faces a crucial decision: should they increase moderation or reduce their engagement with the community?
Drawing the Line
Hallikainen clarified that while constructive criticism is valued, toxicity - including threats and personal attacks - is unacceptable. Some attribute the negative atmosphere to initial launch issues, but the CEO stressed the importance of fostering discussions without facing abuse.
This is not the first time Colossal Order has addressed toxicity, with previous incidents in November. Despite efforts to maintain a positive community, the trend persists.
Cities: Skylines 2 faced challenges from the start, with pre-launch warnings about performance issues. Ongoing efforts address lower framerates and glitches, with the hope that the community can return to its supportive roots. Despite these challenges, the developer hopes for a return to the supportive and kind community spirit that has defined the Cities: Skylines franchise.
