Cities: Skylines 2 Developers Might Reduce Engagement With Community Amid 'Growing Toxicity'

Cities: Skylines 2 is a city-building game developed by Colossal Order. To say it was released in a bad state is an understatement. The game was plagued with performance and stability issues right from the get-go, with angry players voicing their frustration on the game's Steam page and community forums.

The negative reactions to the game got worse, so much so that Colossal Order's CEO stepped in to say something about the "growing toxicity" among the community.

CEO Warns About Pull Back

Mariina Hallikainen, Chief Executive Officer of Colossal Order, said in a recent post that the toxicity the developers had received was something that they had not experienced before. Some of the anger from disgruntled players is not only directed at the developers themselves, but also at some of the other members of the community.

If this continues, Hallikainen warns that it may disrupt the mood of some community members, which may result in less creativity and a lack of enthusiasm to create mods for the game.

She concluded the post by asking the Cities: Skylines 2 community to provide constructive feedback to help improve the game. Players who may have encountered issues while playing the city-building sim are encouraged to provide specific and detailed information. This is to help the developers pinpoint where the problems are so they can fix them in a timely fashion.

What Lies Ahead

In the meantime, Hallikainen said that the company's highest priority is to release the Cities: Skylines 2 Editor as soon as possible. For those who do not know, the Editor is a powerful all-in-one tool that lets players create custom maps, import assets, and share their creations with the community.

As it stands, the Editor is still being tested by a dedicated group of modders to ensure that it is free of bugs upon release. Then, it will be available for closed beta in a few weeks, according to Hallikainen.

In addition, there is an issue that still needs to be addressed concerning asset import. The team is working to resolve this problem and if it's not fixed in a reasonable time, Hallikainen says that the Editor might launch without the ability to import custom assets.

To set the stage for the Editor's impending release, the developers will deploy a patch that fixes the other issues that have plagued the city-building sim, including simulation and visual bugs.
