Have you seen those god-tier items in Path of Exile that are used by other players? If so, you're probably wondering how you can get a hold of such equipment yourself. Well, they're actually made using the game's crafting mechanics.
While crafting in Path of Exile can certainly be complicated, especially when it comes to making those amazing pieces of gear, you can start by learning the basics. In today's guide, you will learn some useful information that allows you to craft your own items.
Item Basics
The first thing that you need to know about when it comes to crafting in Path of Exile is item rarity. There are three base rarities in the game: Normal (white) Magic (blue), and Rare (yellow).
The next term you should learn is item modifiers, aka "mods." There are two different types of mods, Implicit and Explicit. Implicit modifiers are stats that can only be altered using special currencies like Blessed Orbs and Eldritch Ember/Eldritch Ichor. Explicit Modifiers, on the other hand, are those that are referred to as "prefixes" and suffixes."
That said, normal items do not have explicit modifiers, though there are some that do contain implicit mods. Magic items can roll one prefix mod and one suffix mod. And, rare items are equipment that can have three prefixes and three suffixes.

Basic Crafting Mats
To "craft" an item in Path of Exile, you will need to use specific currencies to do that. One of the most commonly used currencies for crafting is the Orb of Alteration. This is primarily utilized to roll specific mods that you want on a magic (blue) item. For instance, if you want to craft a scepter with a mod that raises all of the fire spell skill gems you have equipped, then you can spam the weapon with Orbs of Alteration until you get that particular modifier.
The main reason why most people use Orb of Alteration for basic crafting is that this type of currency is pretty cheap and very easy to obtain.
Another form of currency that is used for crafting items in Path of Exile is the Chaos Orb. If the Orb of Alteration is used to roll for specific modifiers on a magic item, the Chaos Orb is utilized to acquire the desired modifiers on a rare item.
In most cases, Orb of Alteration is fine and is the preferred option if you're on a tight budget. Crafting with Chaos Orbs is only really viable if you have a ton of them.
Aside from certain orbs, you can use essences for crafting as well. Essences are a type of currency used to turn normal items into rare items. But more importantly, essences grant you the ability to reroll pieces of gear with a specific modifier depending on the type of essence you use. For example, using an Essence of Greed on body armor guarantees that you have a flat increase in your maximum HP.
So basically, you want to spam Orb of Alteration or your choice of essences until you get all of the explicit modifiers that you need.
