The upcoming free-to-play "looter-shooter" The First Descendant, from South Korean publisher Nexon, has revealed a new trailer that showcases its graphical prowess on next-gen hardware.
According to GameRant, The First Descendant is actually just one of the many projects that Nexon has on its plate (one of them being another shooter, ARC Raiders, which has been delayed to next year). But TFD looks like it's going to be a graphical powerhouse all on its own, considering the game itself was built using Epic Games' brand-new Unreal Engine 5.
Here is the trailer:
As you can see there, The First Descendant's gameplay features co-op shooter mechanics, all set within a detailed-looking world that looks to be taking advantage of everything good Unreal Engine 5 has. One thing that stood out to us here at GameNGuide is the lighting in the trailer, which could be pointing to UE5's Lumen Lighting engine and is possibly also ray-traced.
But aside from that, there really aren't any more details about The First Descendant's gameplay. Though the publishers did announce that the game is going to enter its beta period on October 20th through to October 26th PDT on Steam. As such, that will be the only time that players will get to delve deeper into what the game offers from a gameplay standpoint.
No beta announcement was made for consoles, however.
Here is a quick description of the game from its official Steam page:
The First Descendant is a third-persoon cooperative action RPG shooter in which you can play as Descendants who inherited the unknown powers and make them stronger to fight against the invaders and protect humans.
The game promises "various unique characters with distinctive concepts and battle styles," as well as different customization options. No release date has been revealed yet.

Still Coming To Last-Gen, Apparently
So the game looks absolutely amazing using Unreal Engine 5, but one curious thing about The First Descendant is that it's also coming out for the PS4 and Xbox One.
It looks to be a little out of the way that a game that looks this good (and is made in UE5) is still coming to last-gen, though it's really far from the only one. Black Myth: Wukong, another game made using the new next-gen engine, also looks extremely impressive and will likewise come to next-gen AND last-gen platforms. Here is a trailer to show you just how good the game's visuals are:
Well, it's still a good thing that The First Descendant will come out for last-gen consoles. This just means that more people will get to play it, because the new consoles are still almost impossible to get roughly two years on. This is despite various instances of price cuts and restocks that have happened since launch. More folks are still stuck with their PS4s and Xbox Ones, and it's not entirely their fault.
What remains to be seen here is just how good the game will run on last-gen. But that's a topic for another time, once it's out.
