The Last Of Us Part 1 Will Not Have Part 2's Prone Mechanic For A Specific Reason

You Won't Be Able To Crawl Out Of Danger In The Last Of Us Part 1

If you're going into The Last Of Us Part 1 after playing the snot out of Last Of Us 2, then you might be in for a bit of shock gameplay-wise.

A developer on the team has confirmed that even if the gameplay of The Last Of Us on PS5 has been shaken up, it's not going to have Part 2's Prone mechanic. As reported by GamesRadar, the reasoning for this is simple: the devs believed it would've broken the game. Well, so much for the fan-requested feature becoming a part of the current-gen remake.

Here is a tweet from Jonathan Benainous, who talks about the omission of the mechanic:

Removing some of the confusing elements of his explanation, Benainous said that The Last Of Us Part 1 doesn't have the mechanic because the game was never built the same way as Last Of Us 2. That's pretty much it. He further says that the original PS3 version is of "no comparison" to the newer PS5 port.

Benainous' reply is also in response to a lot of the game's detractors, who believe that it's just a cash grab that doesn't bring major gameplay shakeups. His suggestion that the original 2013 game and remade The Last Of Us Part 1 does feel different when you actually get to play it; while also saying that those who say other never "actually had their hands on the controller" (via Push Square).

Earlier on, another developer who worked on the game defended the "cash grab" accusations against The Last Of Us Part 1 on PS5. According to animator Robert Morrison (who wasn't actually part of Naughty Dog but Visual Arts Studio), the remake is "the most meticulously built and crafted project that I have ever seen or been a part of in my entire career." He stressed that the project was overseen with the highest level of attention as possible, so it's not "just a cash grab" for him.

Either way, this is just a case of developers being very proud of the work they do. The real verdict is when the game finally comes out for the PS5 on September 2nd. Then, we can all judge Naughty Dog's efforts for the world to see.

Does The Last Of Us Part 1 Really Bring Major Gameplay Changes?

Naughty Dog released a 10-minute gameplay trailer featuring some snippets of the game, as well as developer interviews detailing which changes they made. But some gamers were still not convinced that the remake is worth it from a gameplay standpoint. Here is the video if you want to see it:

GamesRadar had the privilege of seeing the remake in action firsthand. And to say that their findings were surprising is an understatement - at least according to them. Much of their argument revolves on the fact that the original 2013 game is technically ripe for a remake because of just how good it is. The first game came out first for the PS3, and the remaster for the PS4 really didn't push much of an upgrade.

And for Naughty Dog to rebuild it from the ground up in the same technical vein as Last Of Us 2 makes sense from a financial standpoint, considering their recent big project in HBO's live action series. But whatever happens, The Last Of Us Part 1's changes will be a moot point for gamers for years to come.
