Ubisoft Is Shutting Down The Online Services For 15 Games This September

You Can Only Play These Select Ubisoft Games Online Until The End Of August

A total of 15 Ubisoft games from several franchises will finally have their multiplayer/online services shut down this September 1st.

IGN reports that these franchises include some of Ubi's biggest: Far Cry and Assassin's Creed headline the list, with a few games from Splinter Cell and Prince Of Persia rounding everything up. As for the specific games, they're talking about the likes of Far Cry 3, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and Prince Of Persia: The Forgotten Sands.

But aside from the online services being shuttered, select Ubisoft games might also have their DLCs affected. In other words, some games' DLCs will no longer be available to install/access on the aforementioned date. So if you still have plans to get some DLCs for your old Ubi games, for some reason, you better do it before September rolls around.

Here is the full list of the games whose online components will be shut down. If you want to see just which changes will be effected for each game, just go to this specific Ubisoft link:

  • Anno 2070 (PC)
  • Assassin's Creed 2 (PC, PS3)

The End Of An Era

The game industry giant's official reasoning for doing this is simple: they want to focus their efforts and resources on maintaining the online services of newer, more popular games. And considering how most of these games were released during the PS3 and Xbox 360 generation, the decision makes a ton of sense from a business perspective. Maintaining servers cost a lot of money, after all.

However, it also will bring about the end of some favorite multiplayer experiences from Ubi within the past 10 years. Case in point, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood's multiplayer. When the game came out in 2010, it was the first in Ubi's stabby franchise to feature PvP multiplayer - and it was lauded for its fresh take on multiplayer as a whole (via Kotaku's review).

Believe it or not, Brotherhood's multiplayer is actually still pretty much active in 2022 - judging by how many recent playthroughs in YouTube exist. According to YouTuber Fouadix, the multiplayer mode itself "never ages up" and is still a pretty fun experience of competitive cat-and-mouse:

GamesRadar also reported last year that this style of stealth-based multiplayer (which continued up until Black Flag but changed to co-op with Unity) is ripe for a major return. According to them, it is a system that gets its charm from rewarding player patience. Approaching a target directly is not the way it's supposed to be played, and only the most patient killers win - further reinforcing what it means to be an Assassin.
