Fan Creates Concept For An Open-World Remake Of The Simpsons: Hit And Run

Here's What The Simpsons: Hit And Run Would Look Like As An Open-World Game

A fan has created an open-world reimagining of the early 2000s classic The Simpsons: Hit And Run, and it's making the rounds on the internet with people wondering what the game would look like using modern tech.

The fan remake was created by YouTuber Reubs, who uploaded a considerable 17-minute video detailing how the remake which was build in Unreal Engine 5. As reported by GameRant, the remake was actually the result of positive response to a prior video of him remaking the same game in one day. He eventually spent a week on the project to finish it.

Here is the video if you want to see it all:

That prior video he was talking about has already earned over 6 million views and even garnered the attention of Joe McGinn, the lead designer of the original game for the PS2/OG Xbox era. As such, he tasked himself with pushing the remake to a full open-world project - seeing what he could do with more than a week's worth of development time.

As you can see there, the result looks quite impressive. Before he started remaking The Simpsons: Hit And Run on Unreal Engine 5, he made it a point to not only make the game open-world, but also add these elements: better vehicles/driving, online multiplayer, a quest and dialog system, and remastered graphics with ray tracing.

When everything was done, fans were treated to the possibility of the game being remade for modern hardware - though perhaps their hopes won't be answered soon.

A remake or remaster of The Simpsons: Hit And Run is apparently the most demanded of them all, as reported by LADBible back in April. This was according to a poll conducted by GAME UK, wherein Hit And Run beat other classic games such as the original Metal Gear Solid and even Fallout New Vegas.

How This The Simpsons: Hit And Run Remake Was Made

According to Reubs, the open-world map was the "most ambitious" part of the project. That's because it's never been done before in any The Simpsons game, especially in Hit And Run.

Back when the game first launched in 2003 (alongside other games from the same era), the map had to be divided into multiple sections because consoles weren't powerful enough to load everything up at once.

To lessen his work, he used a modern open-world map for Hit And Run developed by a modder called Colou. He then figured out how to import the mod into Unreal Engine 5, and it showed Springfield in all of its open-world glory - something the original game's developers could never even imagine possible back in the day.

He then proceeded to further update the graphics in Unreal by putting things like better foliage, better post-processing to improve the overall visuals, and he also used AI to upscale the textures to modern quality. In the video, Reubs was just marveling at the ease of development that Unreal Engine 5 was giving, all without sacrificing the quality of the project as a whole.

Truly, game development technology has come a long, long, long way.
