Overwatch players were understandably confused (and perhaps concerned) that everything they've ever earned in the first game will be all for nothing once Overwatch 2 comes out. However, Activision Blizzard has now confirmed that that isn't the case - albeit with one tiny catch.
The good news: all of your Overwatch currency and loot boxes will indeed be carried over in to Overwatch 2 when you start playing, reports GamesRadar. Aside from that, the development team has also confirmed that any unopened loot boxes you might have will be automatically opened before the sequel launches - perfect if you're somewhat of a loot box hoarder.
This news was revealed in a recent Reddit AMA conducted by Overwatch commercial lead Jon Spector. In it, he said that it's not just currency and loot boxes but also competitive points and OWL tokens that will be transferred into Overwatch 2, writes IGN.
Here is the Reddit AMA if you want to know more:
Activision Blizzard's decision to do so makes a ton of sense, simply because Overwatch 2 itself will completely do away with loot boxes for good. It's dumb to just throw away whatever players have earned in the first game just because the second game doesn't support the feature. This goes double for folks who actually paid for loot boxes - even though they technically didn't have to - to get good content like skins, emotes, and the like.
However, there's still a catch. As reported by Dexerto, your Overwatch 1 credits will transfer into the sequel seamlessly, but the new game's virtual currency will now serve as the main currency. There would be items that in OW2 that you can't buy using your OW1 credits, but ActiBlizz has promised that they will "share a more detailed explanation" closer to the release of Overwatch 2 itself.
For now, players will just have to wait and see how things will play out once OW2 launches on October 4th as a free-to-play, live service title.

What Else Has Changed In Overwatch 2?
Aside from going free-to-play for the first time (OW1 was a paid game), Overwatch 2 will also feature other changes beyond its new in-game economy. The next few paragraphs will serve as some sort of preparation for any OW1 players out there, so you won't be too shocked.

Team comp changes: OW2 will no longer be 6v6, as Activision Blizzard has done away with the other Tank hero slot. So it will now be two Damage, two Supports, and one Tank per team. As shared by director Aaron Keller to Polygon, the shift to 5v5 from 6v6 "simplifies" the gameplay and allows players "to make better choices" in the heat of battle.

Major Tank hero changes: With the removal of the second Tank role comes changes to Tank heroes as well. For one, the biggest change is with Doomfist - he's no longer a DPS hero, but a Tank. Tanks are also "tankier" with more health, more resistance to knockback damage (sorry, Roadhog), and more shields (via WindowsCentral).
