Dragon's Dogma 2 Confirmed; Will Use The RE Engine From The Resident Evil Remakes

Capcom Finally Confirms Active Development For Dragon's Dogma Sequel

After ten long years, the PS3 cult classic action RPG Dragon's Dogma is finally getting a sequel - which also comes after its re-released version called Dark Arisen for last-gen consoles.

The reveal came as quite a surprise in the midst of so many other reveals made by Capcom recently. But it is official, indeed, as Hideaki Itsuno both revealed the game's logo and title in a recent livestream celebrating the original game's 10th anniversary of release. Kotaku reports, however, that he didn't reveal much aside from the logo and title.

Aside from the fact that Dragon's Dogma 2 is now in development, the team also revealed that they're using the RE Engine to build it, writes IGN. This is the same engine that was used on the multiple remade Resident Evil games. Of course, this includes the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake, which you should know by now is an amazing-looking game in its own right.

Here is the celebratory stream if you want to watch it in its entirety:

In the stream, Itsuno talked about how tabletop RPGs basically brought him into the high fantasy genre as a whole. He also mentioned how he was a massive fan of action games as well, and thought that the type of action (not to mention freedom in combat) in a game like Street Fighter 2 was something that most RPGs lacked.

Itsuno thought that combining the high-octane, fast-paced nature of action games with the deep story and progression mechanics of RPGs was an appealing thing. He eventually pitched some sort of "arcade version of Dungeons & Dragons", which he was put in charge of.

One thing came after another and his original pitch turned out to be Dragon's Dogma, which released in 2012 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 at the tail-end of that console generation. But while the game released to relatively meager reviews, it still managed to earn a loyal legion of fans and became more or less a cult classic.

Should You Play Dragon's Dogma In 2022?

Numerous reviews of the original Dragon's Dogma back in 2012 had more or less similar things to say about it. IGN's review, for example, says that while the game can be rough-edged at times, players should give it a chance. They weren't particularly fans of how the game's characters, quests, and overarching story were written, calling them "about as interesting as porridge."

However, they did say that the game's focus on combat and an online-like offline experience with AI-controlled party members is what carries it through. This is what makes the game far easier to handle - the right party for the right encounters is critical if you want to survive. But they also said that the game's immense focus on this aspect made everything else in it feel unfinished.

Some people, however, look back at the game far more fondly, as evidenced by this review from YouTuber Onos Gaming:
