Captain America: The Winter Soldier has been a critical success thus far, and not surprisingly it's now a box office smash as well.
The Winter Soldier took home the top spot in this weekend's domestic box office numbers from last week's champ Noah, and it really wasn't close (Box Office Mojo with the estimates):
1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, $96,200,000
2. Noah, $17,000,000
3. Divergent, $13,000,000
4. God's Not Dead, $7,726,000
5. The Grand Budapest Hotel, $6,300,000
6. Muppets Most Wanted, $6,285,000
7. Mr. Peabody and Sherman, $5,300,000
8. Sabotage, $1,908,000
9. Need for Speed, $1,836,000
10. Non-Stop, $1,827,000
The huge weekend opening gave Winter Soldier the biggest opening weekend in history for the month of April, beating out Fast Five in 2011.
Winter Soldier opened a week earlier abroad, and that makes its total gross to date $303.3 million. That's quite a bit of cake right there. Captain America's budget was $170 million, so the movie is already pushing a 2:1 earnings ratio after just its first weekend in theaters. And without too much blockbuster competition until The Amazing Spider-Man 2 comes out on May 2, Cap can probably get comfortable in that top spot for a few weeks.
