Starfield's recent gameplay reveal at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase gave fans their first look at what to expect from the Skyrim-maker's first new IP in over 2 decades. And now, a new detail had come to light with regards to the game's role-playing mechanics.
Eurogamer reports that Starfield has been confirmed to have a silent protagonist. Aside from that, first-person conversations a-la the old Elder Scrolls and Fallout games are back. This might not be too weird for people who've played those games in the past, but for folks who have basically been spoiled with voiced protagonists for a while, it might be jarring.
Bethesda went a little different with Fallout 4 by introducing a voiced protagonist and 3rd-person conversations. While this change was welcomed by some fans, others said that this limited the overall depth of conversations - something that made the studio's old games the classics that they are.
Well, it seems like the devs listened, and the silent protagonist + first-person conversations are back. This was apparent in the recent Starfield gameplay reveal, which also gave gamers a closer look at the game's first-person shooter mechanics, character creation, story, and environments to name a few.

Either way, the Starfield gameplay reveal got many fans excited - some of them even joking about how the new RPG basically resembles another game: No Man's Sky and how a lot of its elements basically look similar to Skyrim's. On r/gaming, a redditor by the handle Jardson Jean posted a mockup of the game's poster with the title "No Man's Skyrim," to which almost 70,000 people agreed:
Despite being delayed, Starfield looks like it's well on its way for a projected 2023 release. But if you want to play it, you better start saving up for a beefy PC or an Xbox Series X/S, because it won't be coming on last-gen. No definitive release date was given.

What Fans Think About Starfield's Silent Protagonist
In another post on the PC Gaming subreddit, fans reacted to the confirmation of the silent protagonist in the new Bethesda RPG.
One commenter reminisced on how going for a voiced character in Fallout 4 netted Bethesda a lot of backlash back in the day. They argued that by going to the "tried-and-tested" formula, the devs were eliminating a lot of work (and expenses). As such, they weren't exactly surprised about the decision, though another commenter who replied gave a possible reason why.
According to the redditor who replied, much of the hate that Fallout 4 got from the viced protagonist is due to the game's "horrendously shitty" dialog system. Anybody who played that game might remember that, indeed, the dialog choices were a little too on the nose and limited. But people have varying thoughts about the subject, so how that felt to you is what matters.
For now, gamers who've been playing titles with voiced protagonists over the years should come into Starfield with an open mind. Maybe Bethesda's dialog system was further improved for that new title - who knows?
