RePlay: When was the Last Time You Played Ōkami?

RePlay: When was the Last Time You Played Ōkami?

Here at GameNGuide, we like things that are new. Today is a new day, a new month, and perfect time to launch a new weekly series that is all about nostalgia. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to RePlay!

RePlay is far from the first series we are currently running here on the site. If you have been browsing around, you probably have already seen a #SteamSpotlight article or a ProFiles article. So what exactly makes RePlay different from our other series?

Like we mentioned earlier, RePlay is all about nostalgia. That is because we will be featuring old video games in each article of the series. That includes video games playable on the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Game Boy, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and more.

The most important thing in each feature is that towards the end, we will answer one important question: Is it still possible to play that nostalgic game again on newer consoles? Hence, this is why the series is called RePlay. To play again.

So what game are we featuring as the first RePlay entry? Well, it is none other than the PlayStation 2 video game known as Ōkami.

RePlay Feature: Ōkami

Developed by Clover Studio and published by Capcom, Ōkami is an action-adventure game released in 2006. Yup, that is nearly two decades ago. The game was originally released for the PlayStation 2, but a version of the game playable on the Wii was released two years later.

If you are into Japanese culture, particularly its myths and folklore, this game is right up your alley as the game's story heavily involves these two things.

According to the Steam page of the high-definition port of the game, which is known as Ōkami HD, you "take on the role of Amaterasu, the Japanese sun goddess who inhabits the form of a legendary white wolf, on a quest to defeat Orochi, an eight-headed demon and tyrannical monster responsible for turning the world of Nippon into a ruined wasteland."

Fully embracing its theme and story, one of the best things that Ōkami is actually know for is its Sumi-e ink art style. According to an article by Art News, Sumi-e is defined as "an ancient art form whose name translates to 'black ink painting.'"

Aside from action and adventure, players can expect to find some platform and puzzle gaming elements while playing Ōkami.

And if there is one thing about the game that we should not forget to mention, it is the fact that it won as IGN's Game of the Year for 2006.

Not everyone can say that they still have a fully functioning PlayStation 2 or Wii console these days. So what if you are one of those who do not have one, but you are more than interested to play Ōkami? We kind of gave away the answer to this already, but let us talk about it in detail.

Let's go back to the high-definition port, which is Ōkami HD, that we mentioned earlier. If you are interested to play the game, whether to re-play it or to play for the first time, this is the version of the PlayStation 2 classic that you have to look for. Why? It is available to play on modern consoles.

We already talked about how Ōkami HD is available on Steam, which means you can play it on Windows. Ōkami HD is also playable for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch
