Overwatch Guide: The Worst Hero Combos To Try (Especially In Comp)

Here Are The Worst Overwatch Hero Combos - And Which Ones To Pair Instead

In Overwatch, you get to play as any unique hero you want, with the roster separated into three distinct classes: damage, tank, and support. But if you want to be quite competitive in this game, you have to know which types of heroes to pick so you can complement your teammates picks more. And a good complementary roster is key to victory here.

But there are some Overwatch heroes that just don't seem to work as well together as you'd like. In this guide, you will learn about which heroes to never pick together, as they'd likely do your team more harm than good - more so in ranked matches.

Widowmaker + Hanzo/Ashe

The biggest problem about pairing Widow with Hanzo/Ashe is the fact that you'd have two snipers on your team. Now, two snipers that can do a ton of damage from afar are great to have on paper - but if they miss, then enemies can quickly swarm and overwhelm them on almost any map, writes ESTNN.

Aside from that, they also don't deal too much damage to shields. This makes them quite weak whenever an enemy team picks any shield tank, like Sigma, Reinhardt, or Orisa. Either way, it should be a rule of thumb to never put two snipers together in one match - unless the people playing those heroes have godly aim.

If you're looking for a great one-two punch with Widow already picked, going for a tank like Hammond would be great, says HotSpawn. That's because Hammond's Slam ability can throw enemies up in the air, from where they'd fall in a easy-to-track trajectory for the Widow player. They're basically fish in a barrel.

Echo + Pharah

Another problematic pairing, going for an Echo + Pharah damage dealing combo can easily be countered by hitscan players (i.e. Soldier 76) or snipers like Widow and Hanzo. Their flight patterns are slow and quite easy to track for a hitscan player, which makes them not too reliable.

The better pairing for Echo would be a sniper like Hanzo, which TheGamer calls is among the best DPS duos in the game. Combined, these two can spam enemy tanks (especially shield tanks like Rein, Sigma, or Orisa) and wear down their shields from almost any position on the map due to their high mobility.

Ana + Mercy

Not a lot of Overwatch player want to play Support. But when they do, it's either Ana or Mercy. Combining them in one match, however, isn't too good considering how they can only heal one target at a time. Sure, Mercy has her ult, but you still need to build that up. And the only way Ana can heal multiple teammates at once is her Biotic Grenade, which has a very tiny AoE.

If somebody on your team picks either of these two over the other Support heroes, someone has to choose an AoE healer like Lucio. With him, you get very wide AoE healing. Other Overwatch heroes that can be a perfect complement for Ana or Mercy include Moira and Baptiste.

Sombra + Tracer

These two Overwatch heroes are excellent at catching opponents off guard. Tracer, despite her tiny health pool, is pretty hard to kill because of her Blink and Rewind abilities. Sombra, on the other hand, can literally turn invisible and teleport away from danger when needed.

But the biggest problem with these two as a DPS combo is they can never deal enough damage to win a full-blown 6v6 team fight. A flailing Rein hammer or a pretty skilled hitscan player would still be able to get them. And once they're both down, you're two damage-dealers short - not a sight you want to see during a heated team fight.

Instead, pair either a Sombra or Tracer with another very mobile DPS that can deal heavy damage from long range. This could be an AoE attacker like Pharah, or a hitscan hero like Solder 76. These two types of heroes will deal enough damage to compensate for when Tracer/Sombra can't deal enough on their own at close range.
