Pokémon X and Y Fastest Selling 3DS Games to Date, Cross 12 Million Sales Mark

At this point, it's well known that Pokémon is a worldwide phenomenon. Hell, even Google tried to ride the Pokémon popularity wave at the beginning of the month. While most fads seem to die out over time, Pokémon is just getting stronger and stronger. We've just learned from The Pokémon Company that the most recent games in the series, Pokémon X and Y, have together just pased 12 million sales, and now stand as the fastest-selling 3DS games to date.

With X and Y's new figures, that would bring the total number of Pokémon games sold to roughly 245 million. While the games helped pave the way for the brand, the success of the Pokémon empire owes its success to far more than a few handheld games. For example, the card game is certainly no slouch either, as 20 billion cards have also been sold, and the television cartoons are currently broadcast

Pokemon X&Y have, together, passes the 12 million sales mark, and collectively hold the title of fastest-selling 3DS game to date. The Pokemon Company has announced in a press release that to-date, some 245 million Pokemon games have been sold worldwide. Interestingly, Nintendo announced in January that Pokemon X & Y had sold over 11.6 million units, meaning that some 400,000 units have been sold since then.

The release was sent to us in regards to the latest Pokemon film, Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction. We also learned that some 20 billion Pokemon collectible cards have been sold to date, and that the series' cartoon tie-ins have been broadcast in over 80% of the planet's countries. And of course, there's the movies.

While they may be the fastest selling, the original Red and Blue still have the record with 24 million sales, with Gold and SIlver at third with 23.

Pokémon X and Y released in October to rave reviews as well as great sales numbers. As a matter of fact, Game Freak Director Junichi Masuda's recently revealed that since launch, over ten million of the little monsters have been exchanged since the game launched. It's also reported by Nintendo Life that Masuda expressed interest in making more Mega Evolutions.

The games represent a radical change for the franchise, the top down perspective having been replaced with more of a three quarter perspective, and battles look radically different. As per usual, players will see several new pokémon, 5 of which were teased in the game's trailer at the time of the announcement. There's the usual array of new starter Pokémon, and each game will play host its own type of new, legendary Pokémon. And what's more, a number of classic Pokémon have earned mega-evolutions they can transform into during battle.

No DLC is planned for the games.
