A brand-new demo using Unreal Engine 5 is once again grabbing the attention of many, because of just how amazing it looks - and how much potential it could hold for a future horror game.
A screenshot for "Valley of the Ancient," a downloadable demo project to showcase the capabilites of the Unreal Engine 5 as it was released for early access by Epic Games last Wednesday.
The demo, according to GameRant, is an UE5 recreation of the Etchu-Daimon train station located in Toyama, Japan. It was the project of 3D environmental artist Lorenzo Drago, who goes bu the name subjectn on YouTube. If you watch the video, it looks just as if it was captured live using a smartphone. All in all, the photorealism in his work is insane to behold.
Here is the video, which was uploaded to his YouTube channel last May 7th. So far, it has already racked up almost 870k views:
In the video, Drago showcases how the empty train station looks both in daytime and night time. But perhaps it's the night time scenery that caught the attention of many horror game fans, due to just how creepy the environment looks when the sun has come down.
Looking up the stairs, you could just imagine that some terrifying monster or ghost is going to pop up at any second. Drago even added some suspenseful music for the night time scene alongside some fog, to up the ante even further.
What's even more impressive is that Drago made his UE5 demo without using much of the proprietary tech Epic Games baked into their new engine. The textures, models, and animation were all made by him, and the only baked-in tech he used was the Lumen lighting system. He didn't even use Nanite in his UE5 demo project.
There haven't been a lot of big horror games that came out during the past few years - aside from, of course, the likes of Resident Evil Village. But with this demo, it showcases the possibility of a truly next-gen horror title filled with the suspense and fear of anticipation - all set in an environment that barely looks different from real life.

More Showcases Of The Power Of Unreal Engine 5
This new UE5 demo is just one of multiple that shows the immense potential of Epic Games' new engine to create spectacular games. Fortunately, it's a good thing that so many upcoming big-budget games are already using it, from Hellblade II: Senua's Saga to the next Gears of War game and the highly anticipated sequel to 2015's The Witcher III: Wild Hunt.

Using the city showcased in the Matrix Awakens demo, game developer Tyson Butler-Boschma showcased a Superman stand-in flying through the city with almost no technical limitations. It's an amazing sight to behold - and what's even more amazing is that you can actually play it!
