The open-world zombie MMO The Day Before has been delayed to March 1st, 2023, after its initial release date was set for June 21. But as per developer Fntastic, it is for the best interest of the game - and the fans waiting for it.
According to GameRant, the delay is a little peculiar in an industry that sees game delays. But perhaps the biggest reason is the development team's decision to switch to Unreal Engine 5. According to them, this is to further improve the gameplay of The Day Before - far beyond what got gamers hooked on it in the first place during its initial reveal.
When the game was first announced in January 2021, it got people hooked for its survival gameplay which gave off a serious The Last Of Us vibe. It was billed as an open-world multiplayer survival title, but what stood out the most was its insanely detailed visuals during its first gameplay showcase:
As you can see there, The Day Before basically looks like The Last Of Us' multiplayer but is set in a massive open world. It has all the hallmarks of a post-apocalyptic zombie game: hordes of infected to kill, the need to scrounge for supplies in dilapidated ruins of civilization - you know, the usual stuff.
But since it's a multiplayer title, that's what separates it from Naughty Dog's franchise. It even looks like the gameplay loop is similar to Ubisoft's The Division, but with the seemingly gritty, unforgiving realism of a game like Escape from Tarkov, writes DualShockers.
The shift to UE5 could be the game's biggest hope of billing itself as a true next-gen game because there's really a tough road to climb if you want your zombie game to stand out these days. For now, only time will tell whether Fntastic's AAA offering will be worth the hype.
It was so well-received during its initial gameplay reveal that The Day Before eventually became one of Steam's most wishlisted games, writes IGN. Either way, you'll need a next-gen console or a pretty beefy PC to run it when it comes out.

Everything We Know About The Day Before
A lot of details were already revealed in the game's first gameplay video last year. So, for now, we're going to condense the most important ones for you.
According to Looper, the game will put players in the shoes of a character who wakes up alone in a world they no longer remember. So aside from defending yourself from hordes and scrounging for supplies, you're also likely going to try to find out what the heck happened to the world around you.
The team at Fntastic also says that the game will include "realistic" weapons, which could make for interesting gunplay. Aside from that, players get to meet up with other survivors, each with their own history and motives. Players will also have the ability to sell their loot in survivor colonies, with their ultimate goal being to become "a legend of the new world."
Since The Day Before is now moving to Unreal Engine 5, the game's going to need some serious firepower to run. It is listed as only for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. PC players will get the first crack at it, with console players getting to try the game a little later.
