Niantic Labs, known for developing popular AR games such as the global phenomenon Pokémon Go and Pikmin Bloom, is coming up with a new AR experience called Peridot. Peridot is an original AR mobile game that lets players raise and breed cute creatures called Peridots (or Dots).

Peridot is a new AR mobile game where players raise magical beasts called Peridots that "feel real," according to the game's senior producer Ziah Fogel in a press briefing earlier this week.

Peridot Pets Will Be '100% Unique'

Niantic says that each Peridot is "100% unique" as they will differ in visual appearance. Your Peridot will have its own personality, moods, and abilities. Similar to other virtual pet games such as Tamagochi and Nintendog, you get to watch your Peridot grow from infancy to adulthood. You can feed them, pet them, and teach them tricks.

You can even breed them with other Peridots to create new variations of Peridots. Peridots are born with special traits which work like real-world DNA. These traits are reflected in their physical appearances such as their shape, color, size, and patterns in their bodies. Each Peridot has a unique set of traits and when they breed with other Peridots, they create new variations of Peridots.

According to Niantics, the design of Peridots is based on real-world archetypes, according to a report by Polygon. Some of these creatures can look like unicorns, peacocks, rabbits, or clownfish. Other Peridots will also have skins and patterns that look like glitter, metals, fabric, or even art styles like Kinstugi or Japanese pottery art.

Just like Pokémon Go, players will be able to travel anywhere with their Dots. Niantic used Lightship engine in designing the game. Using your phone's camera, you can watch your pets interact with their surroundings. Peridots are able to recognize real-world surfaces such as dirt, water, rocks, and grass. According to Niantic, your Peridot can also forage its own food from the surrounding. You can take cute photos of your pet and share them on social media directly from the app.

Are Peridots NFTs?

Despite their unique features, however, Peridots are not NFTs. In an article published on The Verge, Fogel says, "It's a really interesting idea ... But right now, we're focused on testing and refining the core gameplay experience to ensure it's really fun and accessible."

Just like other Niantic games such as Pokémon Go, Ingress, and Pikmin Bloom, Peridot will encourage players to walk around and discover new places in the actual world. There is less emphasis, however, on collecting Peridots.

To be a successful Peridot caretaker, you need to ensure the survival and happiness of your pet. You will need to regularly feed it, play with it, and keep it satisfied. Peridots will also have "desires" such as wanting to go for walks, asking for food, or visiting a nearby place.

Niantic will be holding a soft-launch of the game later this month in selected territories and countries. There are no release dates or locations specified yet. However, you can pre-register for Peridot on their website so they can get updates and be notified once the game is released. The game is expected to launch on iOS and Android.
