'Battlefield 2042' Had Fewer Players Than 'Battlefield 4' For A Few Hours

'Battlefield 2042' Hits New Low As Player Count Briefly Dips Below 'Battlefield 4'

"Battlefield 2042" seems to keep hemorrhaging players like crazy.

EA's embattled AAA shooter, according to TechRadar, now has fewer players than "Battlefield 4"--a now nine-year-old game that players seemingly prefer more than the newest one. This only covers the game's PC version for now, but judging by how badly the game's troubles have been, it might not be a better situation on consoles.

According to data from SteamDB (accurate as of February 28th) reveals that the "Battlefield 2042" player count on Steam briefly fell below that of the 2013 "Battlefield" game for a few hours-a paltry 1,734 players compared to 1,794 who jumped into a game of "Battlefield 4."

A few hours later, "2042" still can't compete with its predecessor even if its player count had slightly gone up. On the same day, "2042's" player count peaked at 2,082, while "Battlefield 4" remained in the lead at 2,177 players. Yikes.

This news is nothing new now, considering the state that EA's latest big-name shooter launched in. After the insane levels of pre-release hype, the game faltered as nothing else had before due to the array of game-breaking glitches that rendered it almost unplayable.

Even now, months after its initial release, "Battlefield 2042" is still losing more and more players despite several fixes for it already being out. But this player count drop was likely superseded with another negative milestone.

Back in January, GamingBible UK reported that "2042's" player count is now below that of "Battlefield 1," a game that launched back in 2016. And even earlier in the month, "2042's" player count dipped below that of 2018's "Battlefield V," which is not a popular game by any means.

This is obviously not what EA hoped for, leading to the release of the game. And it's also proof that to get back in gamers' good graces, the developers have an absolute mountain of work to do to bring the game back to a far less sorry state.

Is 'Battlefield 2042' A Dead Game At This Point?

Judging by how many players it has lost since launch day, "Battlefield 2042" is at a point from which not many games- specifically multiplayer ones- have been known to come back. As of now, many players are already considering the game dead, and they might be read.

All of the indications you need is in that brief dip to below 2,000 players on Steam. This has been the sentiment of numerous players on the game's subreddit, where a post discussing whether the game is dead has now earned 5.2k upvotes at the time of this writing. Fittingly, it's a "Star Wars" meme conveying the players' massive disappointment for a game that was billed to be the "Call Of Duty" killer:

The sentiment among the commenters remained uniform throughout: almost all of them agree that EA dropped a massive ball with the game, with one commenter calling it "a dumpster fire of a game."

They even mentioned how EA deliberately stopped supporting older "Battlefield" games and postponed development for a new "Need For Speed" title to work on "2042," only for the game to come out the way it is.

Will EA finally learn its lesson? Only time will tell.
