The next entry into the space strategy series Galactic Civilizations is on its way, with the third main game in the series available in an alpha stage right now on Steam. Unfortunately, access to the alpha test is restricted to those who buy the game now for future release--and the only version currently available is the $100 Founders Elite Edition.
Galactic Civilzations III will no doubt have a more economical edition available for launch, but right now the Elite Edition is the only way to access the game early. Purchasing it does grant you access to all development stages and the full game upon release, as well as any future DLC and expansions at no additional cost.
The 4X strategy (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) series is, as you may be able to gather if you haven't played, similar to the famed Civilization franchise, but set in space with fictional factions. It is developed by Stardock, who also published the fantastic Sins of a Solar Empire, and Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords was released all the way back in 2006--it's more than time for the next entry!
Derek Paxton, vice president of Stardock Entertainment explains the current alpha setup, saying, "Founder's Elite Edition owners can take this opportunity to help Stardock shape the final product. We love working directly with the fans, and getting feedback in this critical early stages is the only way to make the best game possible.
"Though we're still early in development, the core Galactic Civilizations gameplay is functional - we're excited to collaborate with our fans as the game evolves in preparation for its final release next year. The alpha enables fans to jump in, develop their empires, and annihilate their enemies with fleets of powerful warships."
The team sounds very excited to be working on the game, and they're working very hard to make this a great product they believe in. We have alpha access to the game, and will bring you a preview of the experience after we sink some time into the current build.
