The half-serious "Six Seasons and a Movie!" tagline for Community is that much closer to reality as talks begin for a real feature film based on the TV show, which has an extremely passionate cult following. The show was never a ratings sensation, but is has succeeded in spite of that with its own wacky brand of clever writing, pop culture references, and absurd scenarios.
The six seasons and a movie joke started early on in the show, now in its fifth season, and though it originally seemed like a throw-away gag, is now nearly destined to come true, one way or another.
"If the movie has to be made out of clay and duct tape in my basement, then that's how the movie will be made, because there has to be closure," said series creator, show-runner and soul Dan Harmon. "The title of the book about the show is not Community, An Interesting Journey Into A Show No One Ever Watched. The title of the book is obviously going to be, Six Seasons And A Movie. So it's already over."
It's looking like Harmon won't have to make that move himself after all, however. TV Guide is reporting that talks have been held about the creation of a movie, with Justin Lin, director of the last four Fast & Furious movies, being considered. Lin also directed the original fantastic Community paintball episode, so his ties to the series are logical.
If the movie is going to become a reality, all the show needs is a final sixth season renewal, which has not come yet. It was unclear whether or not the show would make it back for a fifth season following a poor fourth, which can largely be attributed to the abrupt firing of Harmon. He is back for the fifth season of Community, and the show has been better for it, even with the departures of Chevy Chase and Donald Glover.
