Google vs Yahoo: The Most Visited US Desktop Website Crown Changes Hands as Google Knocks Yahoo Down to Number 2

Yahoo has, perhaps surprisingly, been ranked atop the list of most visited US websites on desktops by data analytics firm ComScore for seven months in a row. What may have been inevitable to some has now happened--Google has retaken the lead from their competitor and now sits in first place once again.

This particular list only pertains to desktop traffic, but it was an impressive run from Yahoo nonetheless. Google brought in more than 189 million unique visitors, while Yahoo had more than 183 million--still a relatively close margin.

Google has been seated steadily atop the combined desktop and mobile numbers for some time with 228 million unique visitors, but Yahoo is in second there as well with 210 million, a positive showing for the company overall. Google also leads the search engine traffic race.

Microsoft took third place in both the desktop-only and combined numbers, with 175 million total. The top few names on the list demonstrate the power of search engines and social media sites in relation to drawing traffic--Facebook and AOL round out the top five.

There are many other expected names in the top 50: Amazon, Wikimedia, CBS, Apple, and eBay are among some of the biggest. It will be interesting to see if Yahoo can manage a resurgence and retake Google on the desktop numbers list, or if this is the start of a new period of dominance in that area for Google. The mobile market likely isn't going anywhere soon, particularly with millions of Android phones out there pushing Google sites by default.
