The all-seeing eyes of NeoGaf have discovered that Redbox may soon be offering current-gen video games for rental. According to a post by NeoGaf user Exile20 (and verified by Polygon), the kiosk rental service's Coming Soon page briefly displayed a variety of Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U titles. If the listing is accurate, then Redbox would be expanding its game rental options significantly.
Redbox currently only rents out last-generation games for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii. Spotted on the now revised Coming Soon page were rentals for Wii U games Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Luigi Bros. U and Lego City Undercover. Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag and Thief were listed for both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and were set to be available on April 1.
Seeing as how the page has been updated to remove these entries, I take it that Redbox were not yet ready to announce the new addition of this generation’s games. Based on the options, they're definitely going for some popular titles for each console platform.
Currently, the only titles listed as Coming Soon are Mario Kart Wii, MLB The Show 14, and Titanfall for the Xbox 360.
Redbox has established itself pretty well as a place for gamers to rent games that they're interested in. Gamefly is perhaps the most prominent game renting service, but Redbox has the convenience of picking up a game when you want it and returning it instantly (permitted that you're close to a Redbox kiosk and travel isn't an inconvenience).
An expansion of the Redbox's game offerings will be nice for those that rather not sign up for a continuous rental service.
