There's no denying that Sony's method of releasing content on the PlayStation Store is a bit cumbersome and dated. Those who want to buy the day's hot new release, whether that be a new indie title or the latest AAA game, typically have to wait for Sony to update their store with the content in one big push. This means that users are left waiting until the middle of the day for their new game. It's not exactly a good system if you want to push a day-one digital future.
With that, It looks like Sony may be opening up their system pretty soon if the developers of inFAMOUS: Second Son are correct. Sucker Punch has recently tweeted that preloading, the act of downloading content before it's available and then having it activate at a chosen time, will be coming to the PlayStation 4 in April.
“No preload on PS4 until April and for North America, the PS Store will update at midnight PST…so 3am EST,” tweeted the studio.
Upcoming PS4 Update to Remove HDCP, Add Twitch Archiving, and Include Video Editing
Sony has not confirmed these words, but Sucker Punch is not an uninformed studio. Their game is the PlayStation 4's latest must-have. Sony implementing preloading would mean that users would be able to download a game ahead of time and simply wait for it to unlock and then they can play. The current system, especially when it's a game that doesn't get special release treatment (such as Second Son), forces people to wait until mid-day to download a new release. For us on the west coast that's usually between 5PM and 7PM.
Steam currently features a preloading feature that many people greatly appreciate. I use it and I think it's not only convienent, it also builds hype toward playing the game. I think that the PlayStation Store could use some background changes to how they release content, but preloading is a step in the right direction. Let's see if Sony confirms this news.
