In 2016’s realm of political correctness, where certain words are deemed unfit to refer to particular groups, much has been made of Phil Jackson’s “posse” comments regarding LeBron James’ friends and business partners. While some may consider Phil Jackson’s comments as racist, it could just as easily be a case of an older person looking to needle rivals. Whatever the case may be, Phil Jackson’s franchise player, appears to side with his longtime friend.
“There’s different words that different people use in different ways. To some people, the word ‘posse’ might not mean anything. It might just be a word. To some other people, it could be a derogatory statement. It all depends on who you mention it to, who you’re talking about,” Carmelo Anthony was quoted in the New York Daily News.
“In this sense, he was talking about five black men. And do I think he meant it in any kind of way? I really don’t know. I don’t think he did. I would hope that he didn’t. Sometimes Phil (Jackson) just says things, and he says the first thing that comes to mind. And he’s probably in his office right now regretting it.”
Carmelo Anthony has been friends with James since they rose from the high school ranks to become NBA prospects as teenagers.
“I just don’t understand him talking about LeBron James right now in November. I don’t understand that,” the All-Star forward added.
The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski has a slightly different take, pointing to Phil Jackson’s insecurity in running a franchise that led to his controversial comments.
In the interview with ESPN’s Jackie McMullan, Phil Jackson likewise took shots at Heat president Pat Riley, and longtime rival Gregg Popovich. Wojnarowski says that this stems from the 11-time champion coach’s inability to lead the New York Knicks to any semblance of relevance.
The Cleveland Cavaliers visit the Knicks on Dec. 7.
