‘Pacific Rim 2’ Storyline Details Revealed: Del Toro Talks New Monsters And Robots

Guillermo Del Toro Spills Some Kaiju-Sized Beans On The Future Of Pacific Rim

Geek favorite director Guillermo Del Toro talked to the Wall Street Journal and dropped some tidbits that fans of giant robots and monsters duking it out might find interesting.

Godzilla Sequel Already Announced

PacRim2 will be stand-alone and turns the first movie upside down. Del Toro tells the WSJ that all the stuff you learned in the first one (such as the Drift, the joint telepathic control of the giant jaeger robots, and the transdimensional aliens that were sending the kaiju to our world) will be turned on its ear by the end of the second. It will also stand quite alone from the first film, which is interesting since Del Toro and screenwriters Travis Beacham and Zak Penn are very much into expanding the universe in other media. Additionally, the tone will be quite different. Different how, GDT did not say.

Del Toro is kicking new characters around in his head still, but expects them to be of many cultures and genders to stick to the multicultural themes of co-operation in the first movie. In terms of the non-human contingent, GDT promises "some new jaegers, a lot of new kaiju". Let's hope that the jaegers stick around a bit longer this time!

Sixth Film Resident Evil Rising Will Be 3D

But it's not just movies the Mexican-born filmmaker discusses: there's also a comic book and cartoon show on the horizon. The show will be a prequel to the first movie, and will show the pilots and cadets of the Shatterdome, and will introduce characters that will show up in the second one. Hope you like Top Gun with robots! Not much is said about the comic book series, only that GDT was very happy with prequel comic Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero, and that all these stories in different media would be in canon with each other.

Guillermo, my man, with all these other media you'd like to explore, wouldn't it be cool if this franchise got its own Escape From Butcher Bay? I'm just saying.
