FIFA is an extremely popular franchise and one of EA's most reliable sellers every year, even if the titles are sometimes guilty of the sports game stereotype of only adding a roster update and minor changes. One larger change that made it into the series in FIFA 09 was Ultimate Team, which has turned into the franchise's single most popular game mode, and EA is celebrating its five-year anniversary with promotions and free card packs.
Ultimate Team is a card-based mode where the idea is to buy packs with coins you earn through playing to collect better players and eventually create a fantasy team. Selecting the anniversary banner on PC or console will get you five free Gold Rare packs, the items within which are untradeable.
The game mode has seen a lot of success in terms of popularity, but also commercially-players can spend real money on card packs to unlock better players if they choose. The amount of hype and excitement players have over Ultimate Team is pretty astonishing, and it has spread to other EA properties as well, such as the NHL games.
EA also created a red Man of the Match edition of Robin van Persie to celebrate his Champions League hat-trick (ugh) against Olympiacos yesterday, so there's a chance you might pick him up for your team if you're lucky.
They have also created this large infographic to show the success of Ultimate Team, showing off that 64% off all FIFA players play the game mode. It also tells us that 21,849,017 unique players have used the mode since FIFA 09, and lists the growing number of features offered for each game. Take a look below.
