PlayStation 4 HDCP: Upcoming PS4 Update to Remove HDCP, Add Twitch Archiving, and Include Video Editing

Upcoming PlayStation 4 Update to Remove HDCP, Add Twitch Archiving, and Include Video Editing

If you thought Sony was too busy teaching the world about virtual reality last night to announce anything else, you'd be dead wrong. Director of Product Planning & Software Innovation at SCEA has taken to the PlayStation Blog today to announce some much requested video and sharing features that are coming to the PlayStation 4.

Sony may have a reputation for their love of firmware updates, but if you're a Let's Player (or reviewer) you'd be happy to know that the long awaited HDCP block will soon be addressed. The PlayStation 4 launched with HDCP, a method of blocking video capture from the console's HDMI port. This exists to prevent people from recording content such as streamed movies and whatnot, but it also prevented players from recording their own footage outside of the PlayStation 4's own sharing functionality. The upcoming update will add an option to turn HDCP off.

If you're quite fond of video capture on the PlayStation 4 as is, then the other new addition within the announced update will be to your liking. Announced was a new video editor application. Arranging, editing, and exporting clips to a USB drive will now be possible via this editor. Want to make an inFAMOUS montage showing Delsin's cutest expressions? Go ahead!

Lastly, Twitch archiving will finally be implemented. Anyone who streams to Twitch from the PS4 can now save that footage on their channel at 720p. I was a bit surprised to hear that this option wasn't available yet, but good news that it's coming.

The upcoming update does not have a firm release date, but Sony is saying we'll hear more in the coming weeks.
