Strategy tower defense game Defense Grid 2 has been announced for current gen consoles. By way of Polygon, we're learning that Hidden Path Entertainment's sequel to Defense Grid: The Awakening will hit the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles along with PC.
Set to release later this year, Defense Grid 2 is a crowd-funded sequel to the first game, which released on PC in 2008 and on Xbox Live Arcade in 2009. Originally pushed to Kickstarter for funding, developer Hidden Path raised money to fund development of a Defense Grid expansion after their first game underperformed in sales due to a combination of contract problems with Microsoft and spending money revising the game for a PC release.
Setting a true sequel to Defense Grid as a Kickstarter stretchgoal, the company missed the target, but were saved by an investor that was also a fan of the original game. With investor Steve Dengler and publisher 505 Games - which equates to a series of good luck for the developer after their unspectacular launch of the first Defense Grid, Defense Grid 2's development was announced to be in full swing last April.
Defense Grid 2 will feature new enemy types, new and returning locations, new ways to protect power cores, and new and returning towers. Competitive multiplayer and cooperative modes will be available as well as the ability to create and play player-created levels and challenges.
Defense Grid 2 is set to release in the first half of 2014 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
