Minecraft Pocket Edition Update on the Way, Mojang Provides Details

Minecraft Pocket Edition Slated to Get More Mobs, Updated AI and Inventory, Bigger Worlds, and More

Mojang continues to provide updates for Minecraft on PC and the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 ports, but the company hasn't forgotten about its smaller, more portable versions. The Pocket Edition for Android and iOS maybe playing catch up, but it's not too far behind its big brothers.

In a post on Mojang's main site, the company's business developer, Daniel Kaplan, provided some quick details on what sort of changes are coming:

"We're working on restructuring a lot of code to allow significantly bigger worlds in future updates. We're also updating the AI, inventory, and a bunch of other things." A picture of a wolf was included in the post, seen above, a subtle hint that more passive mobs are also (likely) on the way.

When can mobile Minecrafters expect the new content? That's harder to say. The update continued, "Unfortunately we don't have a release date yet, but so far, everything is going to plan."

Available since 2011, Minecraft Pocket Edition is one of the few games that allows for cross-play between Android and iOS players. While it's certainly a more limited version, by no means is it unpopular. It features its own exclusive items seen in no other versions of Minecraft, like the camera, stonecutter, nether reactor, and glowing obsidian.

After hitting 5 million downloads on its own last December, the Pocket Edition of the game actually accounted for 10 million of Mojang's most recent Minecraft victory, hitting 35 million sales between all versions of the game. Available for $6.99, this would add up to about $70 million for the Mojang empire, not bad for a humble mobile game.

PlayStation 4, Vita, and Xbox One versions of Minecraft are expected from 4J later this year. There are no such plans to bring the game to Nintendo's Wii U.
