It was just almost a year ago today that Nintendo dubbed 2013 as "The Year of Luigi," announcing a new installment for the Mario and Luigi RPG series, Mario & Luigi Dream Team, which featured a considerably higher focus on the lesser known Luigi, and DLC that transformed Super Mario Bros. Wii U into an entirely new game called New Super Luigi U, . So after 20 years of standing in the shadows of his infinitely more recognized red plumber brother, Luigi had his time in the sun. But all good things must come to an end, so as of March 18, Luigi's time in the limelight comes to a close.
Nintendo superstar and creator of the infamous brother Shigeru Miyamoto made the announcement on Miiverse, writing, "Thanks to everyone's kind support, we were able to release many Luigi games over the course of the year. I hope everyone continues to cheer for the green brother."
2013 was a pretty good year for the not-as-plump plumber. In addition to the aforementioned titles, last year also saw the release of Dr. Luigi, and a sequel to the critcally acclaimed Lugi's Mansion game, Luigi's Mansion 2: Dark Moon. He even had his own mini-game hidden inside Super Mario 3D World, a facelift of the arcade original Mario Bros., re-christened as...what else? Luigi Bros.
While Luigi's year comes to an end, the plumber isn't going anywhere. The green overalled man about the Mushroom Kingdom is still slated to appear in a number of other games in the future, including an obvious return as a playable character to the likes of Mario Kart 8 in May, and the next Super Smash Bros. game as well.
