Clash of Clans developer Supercell has just announced that they're going to be expanding their collection of games to a staggering three whole titles, as well as releasing sales figures that makes you wish you were in mobile game development.
Last year they generated about $2.4 million a day from their two game franchises- Clash of Clans and f its game franchises, but it's only going up. Just a few days ago their Facebook page was hacked and it was revealed that in ONE DAY they had earned $5 million from Clash of Clans alone, so it's really no surprise to hear just how well they're doing, but the numbers are still astonishing. The Times reports that the Finnish tech company announced that its revenue had risen almost ninefold, to $892 million. Its pretax income was $464 million, up from $51 million. It's safe to say that the company is doing ok and just think- the company started in 2010 with a loan from the Finnish government, and Clash of Clans was created by a team of six people. Say what you want about the free-to-play model but a helluva lot of people are getting sucked into it.
Of course, Supercell isn't resting on their laurels. They have announced their third game, Boom Beach, which will launch in March. The game has soft-launched in Canada and Australia just recently and has already risen to the Top 5 on the top grossing iPhone charts in both countries.
It's going to be hard for them to replicate their success but that won't stop them for trying. The developer knows how fickle these things are- just look at how former titans like Zynga are struggling. But Supercell is digging in for the long haul- the company has hired 60 new staffers last year and plans to keep working the FTP model as long as hey can.
As far as the hacking, they aren't taking things lightly and is working with the local police on the matter. "They stole from us, it's a criminal act," Supercell's chief executive Ilkka Paananen said.
For now, keep an eye out for Boom Beach in a few short months, another deceptively free game that will be taking all the money from you.
