Don't say that Android users never get anything! Double Fine Production's The Cave released on Android only last week but today Amazon is already offering it for free via the Amazon Appstore. This is a one-day sale so don't sleep on it!
Sega originally published The Cave for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U in January, with it getting PC, iOS and Linux versions later in the year. It was created by Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert based on ideas he had while making Maniac Mansion. Like in that classic adventure game you have a number of different characters you can complete the game with. The Cave lets you select three characters from a cast of seven characters and makes you switch between them in order to solve puzzles and advance through the game. This limitation means that for you to experience everything the game has to offer you have to complete it multiple times, offering up great amounts of replay value. As you would expect from Gilbert it's got a great and dark sense of humor (my favorite "character"? The creepy twins who murder their family) and is really just a joy to play, so it's great that Android users are able to get their hands on it.
This isn't the first time that Amazon has offered up new Android apps for release- in order to increase awareness of their Android App store they release a new free app every day, sometimes including brand-new releases like Plants Vs. Zombies. Google is surely not happy with their success, as they're still offering The Cave for its original price point of $4.99.
As for Double Fine Productions, they're currently finishing up their Kickstarter success Broken Age, which looks to be a great throwback to the type of adventure games studio head Tim Schafer is known. The involvement of Ron Gilbert and a number of artists from the Lucasarts days seems to guarantee an authentic experience- you can follow the game's development here.
But Double Fine has been making all kinds of unique, fantastic games. Android users can also nab Dropchord and the free-to-play Middle Manager of Justice from them- the only game they're missing that iOS gamers have available is the incredible lighthearted RPG Costume Quest.
