La La Land, the romantic film that stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, is looking to dominate the 74th Golden Globe Awards bagging seven nominations.
Already a winner during the Critics Circle Awards, La La Land earned nominations for best comedy or musical, best director, best actress in a comedy or musical, original score, best screenplay, and best actor in a comedy or musical. The movie opened in the US with a record breaking per screen average of $171,000.
La La Land is about the romantic love story of a jazz pianist (Ryan Gosling) and an aspiring actress (Emma Stone). The movie is directed by Damien Chazelle and is the director's third film. The 31-year old was also responsible for the box office hit Whiplash shown two years ago.
In the recently concluded Critics Choice Awards, La La Land ran away with eight trophies including Best Picture. Bookies are considering it as a shoo-in to win the Best Comedy or Musical category. It is also looking good to bag the Best Picture trophy during the Oscars next year.
Barry Jenkins' critically acclaimed drama about a black gay man at three different stages of his life earned the second most number of nominations with six. It was nominated in the following categories: Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, and Best Supporting Actress for Naomie Harris.
The Golden Globe Awards is handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of 90 foreign journalists based in Los Angeles. This year's nominees came from a diverse field focusing on different issues.
