Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding is one of the most anticipated upcoming games. And in a typical Kojima manner, the trailers for the game were generally vague, allowing viewers to speculate and form their own theories. But despite this, the game was generally well received based on its art direction and production values; all of which are qualities of a Hideo Kojima game. And with Hideo's recent tweets, the developer has given a few insights on what are his plans for the game. Based on the tweets, Death Stranding is poised to be a ground breaking game.
Speaking with IGN, Hideo Kojima talked about his partnership with Guerilla Games and using the Decima Game Engine. Kojima noted that development for Death Stranding will "enter full swing" in 2017 with a targeted release date of late 2018 or early 2019.
But after the partnership between Hideo and Guerilla games was announced, Kojima ever the trickster, posted a series of tweets that gives a hint to where the direction of the development would go. Kojima tells that space exploration has stalled since the cold war while his goal was to reach the moon. When Kojima talked to Guerilla, the studio said that their plan was to go mars. But now that they're working together, they plan to build a rocket using the Decima engine and instead go to Jupiter. This would suggest that Guerilla Games is helping Kojima achieve a dream he thought wouldn't be possible. Death Stranding will be the rocket that will send the gaming industry to heights never seen before.
This may all sound confusing but that's how Kojima usually works to keep people wanting for more. But a recent interview with Guerilla Games, we might have an idea how the Decima Engine will be used for Death Stranding.
According to Guerilla Games Senior Tech Programmer Jaap van Muijden, Decima Engine will use a Procedural Tech to create Horizon Zero Dawn's world. The Decima Engine will harness a Procedural Tech to create and render full environments including wildlife, effects, sounds and various gameplay elemets included. Death Stranding could use the same tech to create its setting.
The use of a Procedural Tech for a video game was most recently used by No Man's Sky. While reviewers and players praised the tech by the game, many felt that the game didn't use the tech's full potential. But maybe with a huge studio like Guerilla Games developing the Decima Tech and with Hideo Kojima, we can see its full potential on Death Stranding.
