Skype Technologies has recently announced another milestone for its speech to speech translator. With the new feature in "Skype Translator" application, it is now possible to call anyone across the globe on their mobiles or landlines and communicate in a number of languages.
Skype's voice translator application, which was first introduced in 2014, used to work on Skype to Skype calling only. Now, the new feature called "Skype Translator" has made it is possible to translate voice calls to mobiles and landlines.
In order to enjoy the functionality of the new feature in "Skype Translator" application, the user must be a member of Windows Insider Program and has the latest version of Skype Preview installed. A subscription or Skype Credit is also required in order to make outgoing calls to mobiles or landlines.
By keying in a phone number on the Skype dial pad, the option for "Skype Translator" can be seen next to the call button. Tap it to see the settings. From here, the user can select the language and start placing the call. The moment the other line picks up, a voice message will state that the call is being recorded and translated via "Skype Translator" application.
In addition, the new feature in "Skype Translator" application also allows the user to call a contact in Skype if a mobile or landline number is saved in their profile. Choose the Skype contact and tap the translator icon to bring up the options. Save the settings and it is ready to use.
The Verge says that the new feature in "Skype Translator" application currently supports nine spoken languages. Included in the list are Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. It is inevitable that some errors may occur during the automatic translation. Skype suggests using "Skype Translator" application more frequently and a headset while making the call as it can improve the accuracy of the translation.
