Murdered: Soul Suspect is Airtight Games and Square Enix’s upcoming action-adventure puzzle title, and there's hardly any details about it thanks to the publishing team’s well maintained secrecy over the game.
Soul Suspect has been inspired from the popular movie "Die Hard," although it maintains a twist thanks to creative director Yosuke Shiokawa’s imagination of what it would be like if protagonist John McClane died in the events of the film, but continued to fight on as a ghost. "Yippee ki-yay, poltergeist."
The game, currently confirmed to run using Unreal Engine 3, will be centered on Detective Ronan O'Connor, who will make use of his ghostly powers to solve his own murder while fighting demonic creatures at the same time. Ttalk about serious financial constraints...
Back in June this year, Airtight Games was in an interview with Videogamer, where the company's Vice President, Matthew Bruner, expressed the company's belief that Murdered: Soul Suspect looks more visually impressive than "a lot of games" headed to next-gen consoles.
Bruner stated that "next-gen is always a publisher choice and sometimes it's strategic.”
"It really isn't the developer's choice to choose whatever platform you go on. But to be honest with you, a lot of times games that come out at the end of a console cycle really have learned how to use the hardware, how to use the code to maximize what you get.”
"I think in many ways, our game being at the end of a console cycle looks better than a lot of the games which are going to be coming out on the next-gen consoles," he added.
Soul Suspect, per its official press release, will relate to Ronan, currently stuck in the limbo world of Dusk, whose new-found supernatural abilities will allow him “to explore the town of Salem, Massachusetts, from his shadowy afterlife. Unable to communicate with the detectives on his case, Ronan must read the minds of the living, influencing their thoughts and actions.”
“As part of his investigation, he must interrogate the ghosts of Salem's past citizens to piece together the puzzle, while battling demonic spirits to save his soul and uncover the shocking truth about who is responsible for his death.”
Later in July, the game was demoed at the E3 with Eric Stutter, Airtight Games' Senior Design Director, offering a thorough walkthrough for a demo.
The trailer, seen below, is a lengthy walkthrough for the game, spannning almost 26 minutes, during which, highlighted features including lessons on how christening a home can keep ghosts off the premises, possessing the living to eavesdrop on their conversations, (and, apparently, how to slap a cop).
Murdered: Soul Suspect is currently scheduled for a March 2014 release for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. We're still awaiting additional information.
