Multiple reports have claimed that this year, it's Apple's time to duplicate Samsung's rather radical range of enhancements. At least one 2017 iPhone version will sport a defined the edge display. Apple worked on such technology for years, according to various patents, and a new filing proves that the Cupertino-based giant is looking to the wraparound screen for iPhone 8.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 came out with a revolutionary design, a sophisticated display that wrapped around the edges. Samsung then used the same edge design for its Galaxy S7 and Note 7 smartphones, without really explaining the need of a curved display, other than it looks elegant and feels great in hand. According to BGR, a patent application titled Electronic Devices With Display and Touch Sensor Structures, found by Apple Insider, describes smartphones that would feature curved displays extending beyond both lateral edges. Filed on May 19 this year, the patent argues that curved screens might extend the viewable area of the screen and carry information, which is what Samsung's edge does.
Apple also explains in the patent that such curved edges may be used on foldable devices that would fold right along the edges to increase or decrease the overall size of the device. But that won't be the edge display's only feature. Apple notes that ceramic and sapphire glass might be among the materials considered for making devices with wraparound screens.
The iPhone 8's redesign will be "a big freaking deal" and will extremely change this industry. This is especially so that it is the tenth anniversary iPhone, if some researchers are to be believed, cites Trusted Reviews.
