Hold your breath. The hype for Microsoft flagship devices for 2017 is far from over. With fans craving for the coming Surface Pro 5 early next year, Microsoft yet again lit the fire of excitement when it announced its planned innovations of smartphone architecture - that is, turning your phone into a real PC.
During the Windows Hardware Engineering Community (WinHEC) event in Shenzhen, China, Microsoft provided preview of the future innovations in the cellular market. It ran Windows 10 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip complete with HD video playback, Adobe Photoshop support, and Microsoft Office.
PC on your smartphones
According to Microsoft, the growing demands of on-the-go customers for PC apps within the mobile environment prompted the company to embed ARM architecture onto Windows 10 through a partnership with Qualcomm. With this, customers will be able to experience the Windows they know with the apps, peripherals and enterprise capabilities on a truly mobile, power-efficient, always-connected cellular PC.
The development pave the way for Microsoft's hardware partners to build a range of new Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered Windows 10 PCs that run x86 Win32 and universal Windows apps, including Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office and popular Windows games. These new devices are expected to be in the market next year.
No more portable SIM
Microsoft also encouraged its partners to take advantage of the eSIM (embedded SIM) technology by building devices without the need of SIM slot. According to Forbes, eSIM technology is re-writable and programmable such that any carrier can reprogram the SIM to work on any network without removing it.
This is the second attempt of Microsoft to bring Windows experience to the mobile device. It earlier drew flak with Microsoft Surface RT that provided only the looks of Windows into the mobile phones but didn't function like one. With its partnership with Qualcomm, the software giant will be correcting the mistake.
There are so much in store for Microsoft in 2017. The highly anticipated Surface Pro 5, with superb specs and power, will definitely poise a big challenge Apple as it could easily outclass iPad Pro 2 or even MacBook Pro. With the clamors for the release of Surface Pro 5 mounting day by day and the announcement of the breakthrough in mobile phone technology, Microsoft is poised to regain the glory that it loss to Apple and Samsung years ago.
