China will release its biggest movie ever this December. The movie was titled "The Great Wall," and promised to feature monsters, huge explosions and a historical backdrop.
Over $150M USD is the budget for "The Great Wall" movie. This movie will be directed by Zhang Yimou, China's most famous director and the main character will be played by "The Martian" Matt Damon.
Starring a foreign actor in an Asian role is unreasonable as complained by other people. They say that the main role for "The Great Wall" movie should've gone to an Asian actor.
On Mashable page, Matt Damon reportedly said that the complainant and stories labelling "The Great Wall" movie as whitewashed were outrageous. He also said that his role as a mercenary going to China to steal the gunpowder had always been intended as European.
In China, despite the controversy, Matt Damon has been receiving a warmer response. The official Xinhua News Agency praised the lineup of the cast of "The Great Wall" movie. The cast includes Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Wang Junkai, Andy Lau and Jing Tian.
In Channel NewsAsia, "The Great Wall" co-director and Asian superstar Andy Lau also speak for Damon about the criticism over him on his casting in the movie. Some also said that people who complain about the casting of Matt Damon does not actually understand what they are complaining. Damon's role in the movie is a Westerner mercenary and not actually an Asian.
The action-fantasy epic "The Great Wall" movie is set in the Northern Song Dynasty. Matt Damon, the main star, who ends up fighting alongside the Chinese army as they defend the Great Wall of China against a horde of Taotie, monsters from Chinese mythology.
"The Great Wall" movie shooting began on March 30, 2015 in Qingdao, China and scheduled to be released in China on December 16, 2016. US premiere is scheduled on February 17, 2017 by Universal Pictures.
