From villain Harry Grout in "Porridge" to a mentor in "Game of Thrones," Peter Vaughan has set a milestone in the field of acting. The death of the legendary actor at the age of 93 puts an end to another Hollywood era in 2016.
The actor died on Tuesday, as confirmed by his agent Sally Long-Innes. "This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10.30 this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him," the agent stated. The actor has never been a lead in any of his projects, but he still grabbed the attention with strong portrayal of supporting roles, The Guardian reported.

He role-played Harry grout, a villain, in "Porridge," while he was a strict father to the lead actress opposite Robert Lindsay in the 1970s comedy series "Citizen Smith." Petetr Vaughan has also given some challenging performances, one of which is his role in "Our Friends in the North," where he played Alzheimer's disease sufferer Felix Hutchinson.
His recent performance in "Game of Thrones" showed him as a blind but scholarly mentor, Maester Aemon Targaryen, to none other than Jon Snow. Although he had worked in so many series and movies and performed challenging roles, he was lesser known to the youth. But "Game of Thrones" made Peter Vaughan popular among the youngsters at the age of 86, which he felt was a lucky chance for him.

Peter Vaughan said that he was a character actor and he did not have the looks required play romantic leads. "If you're a character actor, you don't need to wait for the next leading role," he once said as quoted by the BBC. "But if you are a leading man you have to wait for the next part. Sometimes that means long periods without work," he added.
