Pokémon X and Y Legendaries Coming to Super Smash Bros.?

Screen Caps Show the Back of Pokémon X's Xerneas in the Next Smash Bros.

We've been getting a lot of information on characters that'll be returning in the next Smash Bros.Luigi, Peach, Sonic, and another form of Link, but not so much for newcomers. In the last few months, we've only heard about the WiiFit Trainer, Mega Man, and the Animal Crossing villager from Pikmin as far as new additions go.

Well, it seems like that Smash Bros. is going along with the poké-craze sweeping the nation, and is intent on adding at least one of the games' new legendary pokemon.

Teasing as much, Super Smash Bros. Creator and Director Masahiro Sakurai posted an image (seen above) on Miiverse with a very distinct image of the back of the head of the legendary stag pokémon Xerneas', saying, "We have absolutely nothing to announce today regarding Pokemon X and Pokemon Y. Really!"

It's not exactly a confirmation that the brand spanking new pokémon (or its Y equivalent, Yveltal, for that matter) will be a playable, standalone character, but it seems to be enough of an indication that the horny creature will at least feature in the game in some way, likely as a selectable pocket monster from the not-yet-confirmed pokémon trainer. Though, Sakurai hasn't exactly been forthcoming as far as the new Smash game goes.

He recently told IGN, that while there's currently no plans for DLC for the upcoming Smash Bros. title, but he hasn't ruled out the idea completely.

While the market for Nintendo's handhelds, the 3DS and more recently, the 2DS, has never been better, proof positive by the recently released Pokémon X and Y, the Wii U has been languishing. As such, there's a decent amount of pressure on Sakuria to provide a standout title to help bring it back from the edge, and could explain why we haven't heard much in terms of new info for the new title.

We'll keep you posted if Sakurai or Nintendo ever follows up on Xerneas level of involvement for the next Smash Bros. game, or anything else for that matter. Super Smash Bros. is scheduled to launch for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS some time in 2014. Sadly, cross-play between the two systems will not be featured.
