Fans of “This is Us” are being forewarned that the mending of the ties between Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) will be a slow and painstaking process. He is still slowly coming to terms with the revelation that his mother got in the way of him knowing his biological father sooner although things have gotten better for them in the last few episodes.
This is according to "This is Us" creator Dan Fogelman himself, who at the same time hints that viewers should also have a box of tissues ready. This could be a disappointment to the many viewers who have witnessed the closeness that Rebecca and Randall shared over the years.
In an interview, Fogelman revealed that prolonging the tension between the two characters is mainly rooted in the show’s intention of making things as real as possible. This is especially true for a show like “This is Us” which has amassed quite a lot of followers because they can relate to the story being told. Fogelman added that id would feel false if the situation will be resolved in an episode or two.
According to Fogelman, Randall and Rebecca are good enough people that can make their family come back from the kind of thing that estranges a family. It is also the kind of thing that people apologize for and forgive in real life. He revealed that they will spread their situation out for a bit longer in the coming “This is Us” episodes.
In the next episode titled "Last Christmas" which will also serve as the “This is Us” midseason finale airing on Tuesday, Rebecca and Randall will have a somewhat awkward encounter that will also tend to simmer down the burgeoning tension between them. The promo clip teases that this will happen at what looks like a Christmas family gathering. The sneak peek shows the adopted son welcoming his mother at the front door.
In the trademark “This is Us” parallel sequence from the past, the young Pearson siblings will be meeting Dr. K for the first time when the family visits him in the hospital. But, the doctor does not look well as he is lying on a hospital bed. With Rebecca declaring that nothing bad happens on Christmas, it is certainly an omen for a not so good thing happening in the show’s return after a short hiatus.
