Enemies as old as time. Like cat battles dog, so too must plumber battle hedgehog, a clash of titans represented for the past few decades by Sonic the hedgehod in one end, and Mario in the other. The two have been duking it out for years now on their respective platforms. At least until Sega went belly up and quit making consoles, relegating itself as a simple third party developer. But still, the battle rages on, and is set to continue into the next generation.
The spikey blue blur will be making a return to square off against Mario and a few other of Nintendo's familiar faces in the next version of Super Smash Bros. set to hit the Wii U and 3DS. That was the announcement made earlier this week during the latest episode of Nintendo Direct, but now, there's a healthy barrage of pics of the erinaceidae, as well as a new trailer, seen below.
Sonice made his Smash debut in the most recent game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii, unlockable after players completed a certain task, like completing a particular amount of playtime, matches, etc. As you might expect, he was the fastest character in the game (as far as movement). Coupled with his speed and a small hit box, Sonic is easily one of the more elusive creatures to grace Smash Bros. While his speed helps him rack up damage, he's not the best for finishing off characters. Much to the chagrin of players who favored using Sonic, he lacked a reliable KO move. Only four "reliable" moves were part of his repertoire, but all had weaknesses. Whether this has been changed in the upcoming Smash Bros. game remains to be seen.
In related Sonic news, the new Smash Bros game won't be the only place you'll be able to watch the hedgehog go whizzing by. According to Destructoid, Cartoon Network is working on a new Sonic cartoon. It's being done in CG, and much like the old-school animated show of the early 90's, is an action comedy aimed at ages six to eleven. Familiar faces like Tails, Amy, Knuckles, and of course Dr. Robotnik will feature as well. It should be released later this fall.
Super Smash Bros. is scheduled to launch for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS in 2014.
