Nokia is expected to develop and launch its first self-branded Android smartphones in the first quarter of 2017. The company has reportedly began formalizing a licensing agreement with HMD Global for the Nokia Android handsets. Apparently, Nokia is reportedly set on competing with Apple and Samsung in the global tech market by 2017.
Previously, Nokia phones had been discontinued in 2014 as Microsoft reportedly focused on delivering Lumia phones. However, previous to the company's acquisition of the Nokia phone business, the company has reportedly been researching about Android features. Hence, the comeback of Nokia phones are rumored to have been planned long before.
Nokia previously revealed its plans to create tablets back in May this year. It should be noted that Nokia had been experimenting with Android and an iPad mini clone running Android. Latest reports claim the 2017 Nokia phones will have a new brand licensing deal under HMD Global, The Verge reported.
Furthermore, Nokia is expected to launch handsets under the licensing deal with the Finland-based company for a minimum of 10 years. Nokia has reportedly launched new phones section on its official site to advertise the upcoming smartphones and tablets in 2017. The Android OS powered Nokia-branded handsets are slated to launch alongside the Nokia-branded feature phones in 2017.
In other news, Nokia is also slated to compete with the more established global brands in the market such as Apple and Samsung. On this note, former managers at HMD Global reportedly licensed the Nokia handsets from Microsoft. Furthermore, partnerships have reportedly been made with Google and Foxconn, Reuters reported.
Nokia Smartphone project is reportedly under the license of HMD Global led by the Nokia veteran Arto Nummela. The Nokia 2017 Android phone is also believed to sport the GOOGL.O Android OS by Google. Additionally, Nokia entry-level feature phones are expected to be selling in 2017 as well. Watch the concept trailer here:
