Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate – Everything we know so far

What’s better than a Batman game on your PC or console? A follow up to the game right on your handheld, which is what makes the upcoming Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate so special.

Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate is basically an upcoming 2D Video Game with 3D art, courtesy Warner Bros, and is being developed by Armature studio. The game is also a partner title to the upcoming PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360-based Batman title Batman: Arkham Origins.

The game is set in the city of Gotham and takes place three months after the events of Arkham Origins. After a mysterious explosion rocks the foundations of the notorious Blackgate prison, it allows the in-mates to take over the facility and control it as their own personal playground.

When Bats arrives at the facility to study the situation at hand, he quickly notes that this is something far greater than a regular prison rebellion. The game will see Batman meet Catwoman for the first time ever and also forge a long lasting alliance with a young Captain Gordon.

As revealed recently, Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate is set to offer multiple endings that will depend on the order in which you take on the in-game bosses.

"It's about a ten hour game first time through. What's interesting is, as we mentioned before that you can defeat the bosses in any order you want, the boss that you leave for last dictates the last half hour of the game," Pacini told Escapist, as scripted by CVG. "The player will get items he couldn't get before based on who he leaves last.”

"You can play the game three times through, get different things each time and the ending is different each time. Along with that we have suits that are only unlockable playing in a certain order. Each suit has a particular perk to it," said Pacini.

There are a number of both famous and infamous characters present in the new handheld version of the game, all out of the comic book roster in the DC universe. Apart from the inclusion of characters like Catwoman and Gordon, there are also some notable bad guys such as the Penguin and our favorite – The Joker. Others in the list include Deadshot, a precision perfect assassin who never misses his target, the zombie super villain Solomon Grundy, mob boss Black Mask, and Bronze Tiger, an accomplished martial arts fighter and sometime assassin.

As with any Batman game, the importance of some cool gadgets is obvious, and the trend continues in Blackgate. The grappling gun, this time, will make up for the player not being able to jump and will help you get to higher ground or a vantage point over the enemy.

The Batarang also makes a return – both as a weapon and a tool, with the explosive gel also getting a revamp to place it on equal grounds as that of the recent movies in the Dark Knight series.

On the topic of Batman heading over to the handheld, game director Mark Pacini told Game Informer: “They [Warner] had come to us with this opportunity that they were looking to make a 2.5D-style Arkham game that was in the Metroidvania flavor and they thought we’d be a good pairing to it, since we were really familiar with that style of game.”

“We made three of them, so it was a great fit and we were huge fans. I’m personally a huge fan of the Arkham franchise, so it just seemed like a really good fit.”

Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate is currently scheduled for an Oct. 25 release for Sony's PS Vita and Nintendo's 3DS.
