The Minnesota Timberwolves are off to a bad start to the season with a 5-13 record and head coach Tom Thibodeau is looking to make some changes. Thibodeau is rumored to be open to trading one of his young stars for a veteran in order to get some wins.
According to Ric Bucher of Bleacher Report, the Timberwolves are looking at three former players who played under Thibodeau. He noted that Jimmy Butler, Luol Deng or Taj Gibson could be headed to Minnesota before the trade deadline.
However, the Bulls might not be willing to trade Butler now that his chemistry with Dwyane Wade is off the charts. Deng, on the other hand, has a very toxic contract that the Timberwolves ownership might not want.
It leaves Gibson as the plausible trade target but Minnesota is already filled with frontcourt players. Out of the team's young core, Karl-Anthony Towns is surely untouchable while Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine might get traded for the right player.
One of the teams that could pull off a blockbuster trade for one of the Timberwolves' young stars is the Miami Heat, per The Palm Beach Post. The Heat are in need of a new star after the departure of Wade and Chris Bosh not being cleared by doctors due to blood clots.
The report suggested that Wiggins is a realistic target for the Heat and they have the assets that could convince the Timberwolves. Miami can part ways with Goran Dragic, Dion Waiters, and some complimentary players.
Justise Winslow, Josh Richardson, and Tyler Johnson can also be considered as trade assets but the Heat front office look at them as the future. On the other hand, Minnesota would love to have Dragic only if they part ways with Ricky Rubio.
They already have Kris Dunn but he is off to a bad start and he might need a year or two to completely get the starting job. Nevertheless, the Timberwolves are expected to be active at the deadline since they brought Thibodeau to get back to the playoffs and not the lottery.
