Wolfenstein: The New Order could have skipped next generation release

Bethesda’s upcoming Nazi thriller Wolfenstein: The New Order has slowly gained some momentum in the industry with its previously revealed gameplay footages and teaser trailers. While all this, alongside impressive graphics, has made the title one of must buys on the next generation console, Bethesda has actually revealed that the game was never meant for the likes of Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Speaking to Examiner in a recent interview, creative director Jens Matthies revealed that Wolfenstein: The New Order was originally meant for a release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

"It started out as a current-gen game, but we’ve been through the switch before with the Xbox to the Xbox 360. It’s basically the same experience, where you find out the new things you can do with these systems. The simple architecture is one component of an easier transition, but it’s also that Microsoft and Sony have learned a lot over the years, which makes developing for these consoles better and the tools we have better," Matthies stated.

Wolfenstein: The New Order has had a somewhat decent impact on the news lately with reports previously stating that the game final release date has been pushed back to 2014. The information was revealed via Bethesda Softworks' VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines during an interview with Polygon.

“Working on next-gen and current gen definitely has an impact, you're developing for two different things. The fact that the next-gen stuff is still moving is also definitely a factor. But the most important thing was definitely just looking where it was at, what they needed to polish,” Hines stated.

“Because it's just not trying to be a shooter, because it's trying to be a shooter that also has driving elements, story elements, narrative, stealth sections — each one of those has to be excellent. It's not just like we're making a shooter, where if the shooting is good, then all 16 hours of the game will be good because it's all we're doing.”

The New Order, developed with the id Tech engine, is set in an alternate 1960 where the Nazis managed to win World War II and are the new rulers of the world. Players will be stepping inside the boots of series protagonist William "B.J." Blazkowicz and will be tasked with launching an impossibly massive counter-offensive against the Nazis that have taken over the world.
