Jose Aldo is the undisputed featherweight champion once again following the UFC’s announcement Saturday that Conor McGregor “relinquished” his featherweight title. The Brazilian, however, still wants to exact revenge on the Irishman, this time at lightweight.
As reported by Yahoo Sports, Jose Aldo told Brazilian TV show Planeta SporTV, “First, I want to defend my title and then go after a fight with him (at lightweight). Just like Dana (White) said, we can choose who we want to fight, so I want to fight him. That’s what will happen.”
Before losing to Conor McGregor, Jose Aldo had not lost in 10 years. “To me, I never stopped being champion. I lost that fight because of an accident. I knew that I would win a rematch, that I would be champion again. It’s not my fault that he’s such a [expletive] he was never the champion. I don’t see myself losing to anyone in this division of any other (division),” Jose Aldo also said.
The UFC made the announcement regarding Conor McGregor’s featherweight title following light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier’s injury forced him out of his UFC 206 title defense against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. The UFC likewise announced that the new event headliner would be an interim featherweight bout between Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis.
Jose Aldo was knocked out by Conor McGregor in 13 seconds at UFC 194. Following that shocking loss, Jose Aldo had been demanding a rematch but had to wait on the sidelines as Conor McGregor jumped to 170 pounds to have a pair of fights with Nate Diaz. Jose Aldo last fought at UFC 200, winning the interim featherweight title against Frankie Edgar. He then threatened to never fight for the UFC again if he would not be granted a rematch with the first simultaneous two-division champion in UFC history.
