An artificial program has been developed recently which can interpret what people are saying even without a sound. LipNet has been introduced to the public which allows a person to identify what the another is saying through the movement of the speaker's mouth.
Brendan Shillinford is one of the researchers of LipNet according to Digital Trends. Lipnet functions on lip-reading per sentence level that uses machine learning. In the largest publicly available sentence level lipreading dataset, human experts got a score of 52 percent while the LipNet AI attained 93 percent.
The team behind LipNet is working hard in developing it and setting goals for what they have made. It is said that this kind of program will be beneficial to 360 million people all throughout the world who have been suffering from disabling hearing loss.
LipNet is important for those people who are disabled. LipNet interprets speech accurately therefore, an individual who has a hearing disability could communicate easily using the program. The creator of LipNet is planning to include silent dictation in public spaces, convert conversations, silent movie processing, biometric identification and speech recognition in noisy environments.
The lip reading artificial intelligence program is developed by researchers in Oxford University according to Computer Magazine. The lip reading artificial intelligence smashes human accuracy when it comes to interpreting words based on the way people move their mouth.
Nando de Freitas is also part of the project of LipNet. He states that surveillance may be an issue with any technology especially on this kind of program. However, it is not one of the applications that they are working with.
He said that he is also aware that other labs will create this kind of program for future use. The researchers disclosed this to the public to make the people aware about how useful this technology is especially to people who are in need. The public must also rely on researchers legal democratic institutions and establish appropriate laws that will protect their privacy and dignity.
