For almost as long as Tekken has been brought to home consoles, it's remained a PlayStation exclusive item, with certain exceptions here and there aside (Tekken Tag Team Tournament 2, and a certain Game Boy advance title come to mind). But with Tekken Card Tournament taking over mobile, and the next addition in the series looking to go the free to play route with Tekken Revolution only for PlayStation 3, a lot of fans are asking, why not spread Tekken around a little bit?
So fans went right to the source, Tekken director, creator, and producer, Katsuhiro Harada, and asked the man if the series would ever grace the Xbox 360. In response, Harada said only, "Ask Microsoft yourself. I already asked them about free to play of the console last year."
So why would Microsoft turn down a free to play game with a huge built in audience, especially when the creator is all for doing so? Microsoft didn't say specifically, but it's likely because the company already had a free to play fighter planned for release.
Seems like Microsoft is trying to use the reboot fighter Killer Instinct, shown during their presser at E3, to combat Sony's Tekken Revolution, as Microsoft is similarly making Killer Instinct free to play. Sony fans are still probably getting the better deal though, as not only is Tekken Revolution available considerably earlier (today as a matter of fact, while the new Killer Instinct won't arrive until some time this fall), but that KI players will have to deal with a catch. In order to make Killer Instinct's roster available, gamers will have to fork over the moolah for this "free to play" title. Don't want to pay? Then it's only Jago for you.
It's definitely exciting so see the return of this arcade fighter, but Microsoft's decision to charge to unlock the game's roster for a free to play game? Disappointing indeed.
